Federal Judge Refuses to Review GM Ignition Switch Settlement

A U.S. judge rejected a request to reconsider his approval of a settlement fund to resolve more than a thousand lawsuits over deaths and injuries blamed on an ignition switch defect that prompted General Motors Co to recall 2.6 million vehicles.


The motion filed by Lance Cooper, a Georgia attorney who first publicly exposed the defect, accused a lawyer leading federal litigation over the switch, Robert Hilliard, of mismanaging the cases and negotiating a multimillion dollar settlement primarily to benefit his own clients, rather than all plaintiffs.

Second Multimillion Dollar Verdict Against Device Maker in Philly Mesh Trial

A Philadelphia jury has handed up a $13.5 million award to a woman claiming she was permanently injured from a pelvic mesh device that eroded inside her.


The jury unanimously handed up the award,giving plaintiff Sharon Carlino $3.5 million in compensatory damages and $10 million in punitive damages.

Placing Profits Over Patients ‘Beyond Reckless,’ Claims Mesh Plaintiffs’ Attorney

The attorney representing the plaintiff in the ongoing pelvic-mesh trial in Philadelphia hammered the device makers during his closing argument for their alleged failure to tell doctors and patients about the erosion rates of the device and the risk of permanent harm.


During closing arguments Tuesday, Kline & Specter attorney Shanin Specter told the jury in Carlino v. Ethicon that the company's conduct was "beyond reckless."
